Edited to add: A friend helpfully pointed out to me that I had missed a huge one this week. That’s what I get for swearing off Twitter for 4 days so I can read a book. Oh, well. This post now reflects that information.
This week’s big topic: Pastors who threaten people and the people who listen.
Pastor Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church recommends electric fence for gays

Really? Really?! I don’t care how you feel about the sinfulness/non-sinfulness of homosexuality. It ought to make you mad that this person claims to represent God and the Church. Pastor Worley, this isn’t the way to help people find Jesus.

Well. Isn’t that special.
This woman seems unaware that this happened:
Meanwhile, Hustler proved that liberals are jackasses, too. New York Daily News columnist S. E. Cupp was victimized by having her image Photoshopped into lewd pictures. I don’t care what her politics are, and I don’t care that it was a “joke.” It wasn’t funny and NO WOMAN ANYWHERE DESERVES TO BE TREATED THAT WAY. Yes, you did just read me shouting.
In other news, because I don’t want to leave this on such a downer, here are a couple of great posts from the fabulous Rachel Held Evans. Whenever I want to read something thought-provoking and uplifting, I read her blog. I cannot wait to get my hands on her upcoming book. Meanwhile, enjoy a couple of cool posts from this week:
“All right, then, I’ll go to hell.” RHE eloquently puts into words the feelings so many of us have. I love this post.
Ask a Seventh-day Adventist I honestly don’t know much about Adventism. In my entire life, I’ve known exactly two people active in the faith and one family that left the faith. The ones who left called it a “cult.” I enjoyed reading more about it, although I don’t know if I feel more confused or less.
Have a great week, everyone!

Regarding the S.E. Cupp news, I would like to point out that this is a regular piece in the magazine that also features men.
Amy
I’m not fond of using people’s heads Photoshopped onto other bodies in general, much less without their consent. I didn’t know this was a regular feature. That makes me even more disgusted, actually. I would be furious if someone did that to me, joke or not. Years ago, TV Guide was sued for Photoshopping Oprah’s head onto Ann-Margaret’s body. I fail to see how this is different. I’m not sure whether it’s in the same protected category as other parody.
Stacy
Oh, it’s absolutely disgusting. I just meant to say they weren’t specifically targeting women. They photoshop men with…um…things in their mouths, too.
Amy
Ah, got it. Wow, I guess I’m out of touch with the porn industry. Somehow, I don’t feel terribly bad about that.
Hmmm…I may have to write a whole blog post about using sexualized images to shame people we don’t like.

It is not surprising that you missed this. The liberal media misses the point and jumps all over Rush for using a derogatory comment against Fluke, but can’t be bothered to mention this or when Bill Mahr does much worse against a conservative. If this does not prove a liberal media bias, nothing will.
Adam Matteson
To clarify, I did not mean you personally, I think most people missed this. If one reads that comment wrong it could seem like I was trying to insult you, not my intent, just the limitations of Internet communication.
Amy
I didn’t take it personally at all. I’m glad that your wife pointed out that I’d missed it. It turns out that all my feminist friends (on both sides of the political aisle) had been blogging about it Monday & Tuesday, but my Twitter fast meant I didn’t see their posts. Many of my liberal friends actually had the same complaint–that their usual news outlets failed to report it. So discouraging.
