Howdy do, people? It’s that time again: WIPpet Wednesday! It’s been a good week. I got the final edits back on my novel, made the changes, and sent it back. Now the fun begins…just a little over two months til it’s officially out!
On to other things. Here’s my ROW80 update:
- Write 1 hr/day in Passing on Faith: Nope. But I have a good excuse. I was busy writing a short story and making the changes to my upcoming novel. My goals will be waylaid another week because I’m going out of town for the holiday weekend. Hopefully, once the school year starts, I’ll be back to finishing this thing.
- Read 30 min/day: √ Always. I finished two books since last Friday and I’ve started another one.
- Write at least 1 blog post/week other than ROW80/WIPpet: √ Two this week! A book review and my short story.
And here’s my WIPpet:
This is the last segment I’m posting in this section of Passing on Faith. I think we get the idea that 1. Micah is having issues and 2. Cat’s annoying but nice. Time to move on. But this is a bit more of their conversation from last week’s WIPpet. Next time, I’m moving on to a new plot point.
You get 2 + 7 = 9 short dialog paragraphs.
“My father was…” This was the part he’d always hated explaining. It typically produced one of two reactions: shock and dismay or shock and enthusiasm. He didn’t care for either response. He grunted. Might as well get it over with. “My father was a minister.”
“Uh…oh,” Cat said. “Okay.”
That hadn’t been what Micah was expecting. “Yeah. And he sort of owned three houses. Well, two of them belonged to the church, technically, but he more or less owned that, too.”
Cat paused in his scrubbing. “Let me guess. He left the other houses to the church and you got this?”
“Sort of,” Micah agreed. “More like, my brothers are living in the other two and I got this.”
At that, Cat’s eyebrows shot up. “That’s…interesting,” he said.
Micah rolled his eyes. “You can say it—that sucks. I was never Pop’s favorite son.”
“Why not?” Cat turned his back to Micah and started in on the stove top.
“That’s an even longer story.” He huffed. “Let’s just say Pop had more traditional beliefs.”
Like what you see? Want to come out and play with us? Thanks to our host, K. L. Schwengel, you can! Just post a bit of your work-in-progress, link it to today’s date, and add it here. Don’t forget to read the other entries. Happy writing!
Ruth Nestvold
Congrats on all your progress!
I’m thinking it’s a good thing that Cat is able to surprise Micah. 🙂
AM Leibowitz
Ha! He’s full of surprises. 🙂
Sirena Robinson
Curiouser and curiouser…….can’t wait to read more, Amy!
AM Leibowitz
Aw, thanks! 🙂
AJ
=P I’m going to like this story line I think
AM Leibowitz
I hope so. It won’t be visited so directly with Cat just yet, but eventually it will.
L.S. Engler
The dialogue definitely made me want to know more; well done! And good job with your ROW goals, too! Sometimes other muses call, and you’ve got to answer them, right?
AM Leibowitz
Absolutely! I don’t feel too bad about missing the one goal this week. It’s been busy with a lot of other things, and I had my first paid editing job, too. I’ll be back on track soon enough.
I’m glad you liked the snippet! 🙂
ReGi McClain
Aww… *sniffles* Poor Micah.
AM Leibowitz
Yeah. He honestly needs more help than he realizes. Good thing he has Cat. 🙂
K. L. Schwengel
Ah…Micah. *sigh* You poor boy. And Cat is definitely worming his way in, isn’t he?
AM Leibowitz
Oh, he absolutely is. Micah’s in a horrible place but doesn’t realize what’s triggered it. For now, he’s simply giving a fairly surface answer, but Cat’s not one to let things go. 😀
Elaine Jeremiah
I really like Cat, he’s very open and honest in his responses to Micah. I can’t remember all of the previous WIPpets you’ve shared but I think I can guess why Micah’s dad had it in for him! I like the way that Micah is surprised by Cat’s response. I kinda thought he might be!
AM Leibowitz
Your guess is probably right. 🙂 At least, mostly—it’s what Micah believes, and it’s correct for the most part. But it’s complicated, and Micah’s about to find that out. Cat’s full of surprises, of course. 😉
Xina Marie Uhl
Ooooh! Do show him how nontraditional you are, Micah! *rawr* Love it! Cat’s personality really comes through here as does Micah’s. They’re rather opposite, aren’t they? Good work!
AM Leibowitz
LOL! They’ll get there. 🙂 Actually, I realized today that I had inadvertently created them as two halves of a whole in terms of a certain type of religious experience and how those things can be integrated.

Maybe Micah’s dad didn’t read that part in the Bible about not judging others..?
My biggest concern is that Micah be OK with his more -non-traditional – way of being.
And Cat is so matter-of-fact about all this, asking a few questions, but not trying to make Micah say more than he’s ready to, letting him stay on the surface, and keeping busy so that Micah can have a certain amount of space…
I really like these two together. Even when there’s no flirting whatsoever going on, because there’s deep comfort in just being accepted…
AM Leibowitz
I very much doubt his dad read that part. Micah’s worked hard to be okay with himself, but never quite got there–and his father’s death is bringing a lot of that doubt back to the surface. Plus, he’s not used to having anyone take an interest without flinching. He’s not quite ready to fall yet…but he will be!
Steph
I may have said this last time, but I love the simplicity of your goals. Sounds like you’re doing great. Keep it up!
AM Leibowitz
Thanks! 🙂
Beth Camp
Writing, reading, and blogging — nice focus on the essentials and with good progress, even if that writing progress is on something new. Cat’s questions certainly are drawing Micah out. Interesting dynamics between the two!
AM Leibowitz
I like the way ROW80 allows for setting simple goals. I find a focus on word count to be too high-pressure. In fact, my word counts are significantly higher when I’m not stressed about them.
Cat’s tenacious, I’ll give him that. He’ll win Micah over. 🙂
Emily Witt
I love Cat’s matter-of-fact-ness about the whole thing. I’m looking forward to seeing into other parts of the story though!
AM Leibowitz
Yeah, as much as I love the two of them, I’m anxious to show everyone what else is going on. There are a couple of characters I can’t wait to introduce!
Mariella
Now I’m sad for Micah and curious about how his house is so terribly bad…lol. I love the flow of this excerpt! 🙂
AM Leibowitz
Thanks! His life has been…rough. The house is only bad because no one’s lived in it or bothered to fix it for quite some time. Good thing he’s about to have some help!
