Woo hoo! I’m ridiculously excited to feature my good friend and colleague, author Adrian J. Smith, with her thoughts on our publisher’s anthology Love Is a Mess. Adrian writes fantastic stories ranging from urban fantasy to crime drama, featuring lesbian and bisexual women living adventuresome lives. I could fangirl all over the place, but I’d rather take up your time by giving you her words on her story Quarter Life: Energy Feed.
Quarter Life: Energy Feed is an introduction to a greater series I have been working on for a few years. The first installment comes out in October, and I can’t tell you how excited I am. Energy Feed is a very good introduction to the main character Faye. She’s determined to get what she wants and will go to almost any extent for information, blood, anything she sees she needs.
Energy Feed is a story of mystery and manipulation. There’s not a lot of love involved at all, and like a lot of Valentine’s Days, love isn’t important. Love in the sense of this story is sex. None of the parties interested go into the relationships shared with an indication that they want love. They want a bit of fun on a Valentine’s Day, and Faye wants to get information and a feeding.
When the prompt of Love is a Mess was given to me, I knew this story would fit. Partially because Faye is bound to make a mess of anything she gets involved in, but especially where it concerns love. She completely understands love in the sense of lust, and she’s willing to use that to her advantage whenever possible.
Valentine’s Day is a day when people step out of their shell, when they do something uncomfortable for the possibility of something nice. That’s exactly what Faye is doing. This story among many other in the anthology is a story of sticking through the bad for a glimpse of the good. Love and hurt go hand in hand together. We are most easily hurt by the ones we love; Valentine’s Day is the epitome of that.
Faye experiences both pain and pleasure in this short story of hers. It’s almost to the extreme, but she’s a pretty extreme person in general. She takes risks that others would not ever be willing to take, and she tries new things no one would ever think of trying. So when you read this story, feel free to expect the unexpected and to believe in the unbelievable.
