It’s Saturday, time for another snippet! I can’t believe it’s already April. This will be my last snippet from Anthem, since I have a new novella out and a novel releasing in May, and I’d like to offer bits of those, too.
This is slightly longer than 6 sentences—it’s 6 lines of dialog instead. For context, the reason Nate was telling Trevor that story is because he doesn’t quite understand what it means that Trevor is bi (a fact which he hasn’t revealed to his fiancée). Nate’s imagining something more like his former boyfriend, who stayed closeted, got married, and had a string of affairs. Trevor’s setting him straight (er…so to speak).
They sat quietly for another minute before Trevor said, “Marlie was my first, you know. I mean, other than what you and I did. Summer before college.”
Nate glanced at him. “No, I didn’t know. Guess I should have assumed, though.”
“I’m not going to be like Rocco. This is different. I won’t cheat on her.” He tilted his head. “Huh.”
“What?” Nate asked.
“That’s it. I said it out loud—I won’t cheat on her because I love her.” Saying it gave him a rush. He laughed and ducked his head, knowing his cheeks were turning red. In all the years he’d been doing this dance, he’d never said the words to Nate’s face. “I love her,” he repeated.
Nate relaxed, though his smile was sad. “You’ll be happy with Marlie. Think how much happier you’ll be if you tell her the truth.”

Aw… I feel bad for Nate.
And I have to wonder if Trevor is going to tell Marlie and how she’ll take it…
AM Leibowitz
Yeah, Nate’s had some rough times. And Trevor really does need to learn to be honest with everyone, himself included. This is Step One.
Addison Albright
Yes, Trevor, tell her the truth (and let us be a flies on the wall to see it)!
AM Leibowitz
LOL! Oh, he will. 😉
Jackie Keswick
Seems like Nate gets the tricky end of the bargain.
AM Leibowitz
Nate hasn’t had great luck with relationships, no. But hey, that’s what sequels are for, right? 😉
JL Merrow
Why is bisexuality so widely misunderstood? #rant
Good to see some positive representation! 🙂
AM Leibowitz
LOL! I write specifically about bi folks, regardless of what genders I’m writing, for that very reason. 🙂
Louise Lyons
He should tell the truth. Secrets have a way of catching up with you.
AM Leibowitz
Oh, do they ever. Trevor’s secret is about to become very publicly not so secret anymore.
Jana Denardo
Nate’s definitely right about that.
AM Leibowitz
He is right, though Trevor’s nerves are understandable.
Rian
Aww, poor Nate! I feel sorry for him:( Please find someone for him, pleaaase!
AM Leibowitz
No worries! Nate’s going to get everything he needs and then some. 🙂
Alexa Milne
I wonder how the reveal will go.
AM Leibowitz
Um…well…at least Trevor will be honest.
Elin
That’s so sweet, and a bit sad. I’ll be interested to see how you balance that relationship.
AM Leibowitz
Their friendship is going to be tested for sure, but they’ll both come out better on the other side.
Charley Descoteaux
Sweet moment. I’d like to be a fly on the wall for that convo too!
AM Leibowitz
Heh, as in real life, it’s going to take more than one talk.
Antonia Aquilante
I feel a bit bad for Nate, but he is right. Trevor should tell the truth.
AM Leibowitz
He has a lot of people he needs to be honest with, including himself.
