Happy Wednesday! I’ve already been busy. Over the weekend, I read 4 books in 4 days, and all of them have been really good. You can scroll through my recent blog posts to read the first three reviews, and the fourth one will be up tomorrow.
Now that I’ve sent Cat off to my publisher, he’s officially no longer a WIP. I already miss him, and I won’t see him again until I get my list of edits. Not only that, I don’t get to write about him again until at least this fall. So that means I’m on to posting what I’m currently writing: Nightsong, the sequel to Anthem. I don’t yet have a blurb for it. Like Anthem, it’s proving harder to write than I expected. I’m hoping to get the bulk of it done this month.
For anyone who’s forgotten, this series is about 4 roommates who are all aspiring musicians. Trevor, the Christian worship artist; Nate, the opera singer; and Mac and Jamie, who have a band (of sorts). Some of you might recall Jamie’s awful boyfriend, who thus far has gone nameless (he gets a name in Jamie’s story).
WIPmath: No math. It’s the first snippet from this novel, and it’s the first Wednesday of the month.
Tired and with aching feet, Nate opened the door to the apartment, ready to put away the few groceries he’d bought, grab a beer and throw himself onto the couch to watch mindless something or other until the other guys he lived with arrived home. Instead of silence, he was greeted by the sound of angry voices drifting from the hallway by the bedrooms. He was torn between worry and a sense of deja vu. If they kept it up, their downstairs neighbor—affectionately referred to as Mrs. Crochety—would have something to say about it. He stepped into the apartment and peered around cautiously.
Sure enough, outside the bathroom, Jamie was having another fight with his on-again, off-again boyfriend. Everything about Nate’s day felt like it was on repeat, from the backstage attitudes to Del’s relationship drama to this. Nate tried hard for Jamie’s sake not to hate The Boyfriend, whose name he intentionally didn’t remember, but it was damn hard. The Boyfriend was whiny, immature, and entitled. None of them understood why Jamie liked being around him, especially on days like today.
Like what you read? Be sure to check out the other entries and add your own. Just post a bit of your WIP, connect it to the date, and link up with us. Many thanks to Emily Witt for giving us this space. Happy reading and writing!

‘whose name he intentionally didn’t remember’ ha! Liked that.

LOL! Yeah, they really dislike him, for a lot of good reasons.

Your beginning begins with drama and opens up a questions for the reader. It brings them in.
Good opening. I like these two paragraphs.

Thanks! 🙂

Love it! From the “few groceries” to the “whose name he intentionally didn’t remember” I have an excellent image of Nate here…. So when does the Boyfriend get his?
AM Leibowitz
You mean get what’s coming to him? LOL. Not in this story. Sadly, Nate doesn’t even know the half of what’s wrong between Jamie and The Boyfriend.

Is Jamie in love? Is the sex so awesome that he’s willing to put up with the rest? Does he have self-esteem issues?
Is it something else?
I’m intrigued.
I especially like “mindless something-or-other” and the intentional forgetting of The Boyfriend’s name. I’m also hoping that tomorrow has some variety for Nate!
AM Leibowitz
Nate’s about to get a LOT of variety.
Both Jamie and The Boyfriend have some history and some things they need to work out. They’re not good for each other, but neither of them is capable right now of acknowledging it.

Yup, he definitely sounds pretty awful! I smiled at “Mrs Crotchety” and also at “whose name he intentionally didn’t remember”. This mightn’t be the longest snippet but it already gives a good sense of more than one character.
