Happy Saturday! Summer is winding down. Only two and a half weeks until school starts. For the first time, both my kids will be at the same school and will be for the next 5 years until Kid 1 graduates (omg…5 years is not that long…)
For this week’s snippet, I’m setting aside Nightsong temporarily while I whip its butt into shape for my betas. For now, I’m pulling from a short story which was published back in mid-July in Torquere’s Summer Lovin’ anthology. When I saw the theme was on the 1950s, it practically screamed my name. So here’s a bit of Pink in the Mirror, a f/f story about drag racing and first love. (Bonus points if you know the song the title was taken from.)
Here’s the tagline: Before, Barbara’s goal was to win the county drag race. Now all she wants is to win Dottie’s heart.
Barbara’s thick blonde hair, cut into a perfect Elizabeth Taylor bob, ruffled a little in the breeze from the open window. She leaned in toward the mirror over her dresser to apply her lipstick. Pink, never red. She puckered her lips, hating the waxy feel that clung even after blotting on her handkerchief. Grunting, she tugged at the junction of her garter belt and stockings. She was slim enough not to have to bother with a full panty girdle, a fact for which she would be forever grateful. Turning to face the mirror on the back of her door, she adjusted the collar of her button-down dress, let her half-slip fall back into place, and smoothed her skirt down before sliding her feet into low heels.
Rainbow Snippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!

Great attention to detail. Love how she hates the feel of lipstick. (So do I.)

Me too! My mom said that when I was first learning how to use it, I would hold my lips in a pucker because it felt so strange. I no longer wear it, and I think my spouse is probably happier kissing me without, LOL.

Loved all the details you wove into this.

Thank you! 🙂

Beautiful, almost sensual attention to detail, mingling perfectly with a touch of realism. The character sounds hot, even though you never used the word. 🙂

Thanks! Wait til you see her in her other life. 🙂 And of course, there’s also Dottie, the other woman in this story.

Can’t wait!

Ugh. Lipstick. I can imagine back in the fifties, it was even more like axle grease than it is now.

I hate lipstick. I mean, I kind of like the way it looks sometimes, but it does feel gross. I went through a phase when I was 14 of trying to fit in (bahahaha!) by imitating this one friend who loved lipstick. I look back on it now and cringe.
Charley Descoteaux
Great descriptions in this snippet, you put me right there with her.
I went through a lipstick phase too but am so glad i ditched it. I never was very good at choosing shades and made some unfortunate purchases before i wised up. *lol*

LOL! Me too. There was this one shade of pink Bonne Belle lipstick that for some reason I had endless tubes of. It was not a good color on me. I’m kind of a Chapstick fan these days.
