I’m about to go on an adventure: A lock-in with 60+ teenagers/pre-teens (grades 6-12) for the school musical. They’re doing Barnum, the circus musical. Yeah, I’d never heard of it either. We just watched the DVD of the grades 6-9 musical, Elf Jr., from November. I’d forgotten how cute those kids were. They did a nice job.
For my snippet, I’m posting another 6 sentences (well, technically 7, but one is only 1 word) from Keeping the Faith. Micah has gone to see his sister-in-law, and they’ve been interrupted by her youngest child’s tendency to get into mischief. A number of you guessed correctly last week that Robbie has hemophilia, like his uncle.
Micah toted Robbie back out to the living room and kept hold of him when he sat back down, tickling Robbie’s toes and making him squirm while LR examined him for injuries. His tears transformed into giggles. Micah looked up at LR as she sank down next to them.
“Do you ever worry about him?” he nodded his chin at Robbie.
“Clearly not enough,” LR muttered. Louder, she said, “Sometimes. I try not to, but it’s hard.”
Rainbow Snippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!

Wow, you’re brave–60+ kids?! Adventure is one way to put it. 🙂

Well, they’re the theater kids. They turned out to be a surprisingly mellow group this year (it’s my 3rd time chaperoning). There were half a dozen other parents there, so it was all good.

sweet moment, tears to laughter…
AM Leibowitz
Yup! A very familiar thing for a parent. 🙂
Addison Albright
I don’t envy you that lock-in!
Sweet scene…I’m glad he appears to be okay. 🙂
AM Leibowitz
The lock-in wasn’t bad. The kids are a pretty nice bunch and surprisingly quiet this year.
Yep, the baby is fine. Glad you liked the snippet! 🙂

I don’t know how parents cope, when they have a child with haemophilia or severe allergies, or anything else that would make me terrified of letting them out of my sight.
Great snippet! 🙂
AM Leibowitz
Yeah, I’m not sure how I would do with something life-threatening. My own two both have things, but not conditions where they could die from it.
K.S. Trenten
Sweet, heartfelt comment which only too many parents and elders can relate to!
AM Leibowitz
Yup! Even with kids who don’t have anything life-threatening, it’s hard not to worry about them.
Jana Denardo
That IS an adventure that I hope isn’t TOO crazy. And this is a very sweet scene.
AM Leibowitz
It ended up being the most mellow lock-in I’ve chaperoned for the theater kids. 🙂
Glad you liked the scene! 🙂

It would be hard not to worry. And even harder not to worry so much that you transmit your fears to the child.
AM Leibowitz
Yes, it really can be. Even when it’s not life-threatening, it’s hard not to worry in a way that makes the child stressed.

Thinking back to the way LR was with Cat in Walking by Faith…it’s fascinating to watch the way she is with Robbie. I get a feeling she and Micah are shifting in different directions, becoming less and more careful/worried with Robbie in contrast to Cat.
AM Leibowitz
That’s about right. I’ll post a couple more snippets from this part, but mainly she’s afraid of getting it wrong as a parent. Micah doesn’t have to worry about that, but he doesn’t want to create tension. It’s a fine line.
Cheryl Headford
Oh my, how cute. Such a sweet snippet
AM Leibowitz
😀 The baby doesn’t feature much in the story, but I did like writing a little about him for this scene.
Jackie Keswick
What did you do to be punished with a lock-in?
And Robbie’s mum is putting on a brave face there.
Antonia Aquilante
Such a sweet moment.
