Happy Saturday! We’re back from vacation, and I’m ready to get down to Camp NaNo. I’m working on the next Notes from Boston novel, Drumbeat. This is Jamie’s story, and…well. I have a feeling, after some recent conversations, that it may not be to everyone’s liking. But it’s the story Jamie wants me to tell, so I will.
My new collection of short stories, Leaps of Faith, is coming out July 12. These are set in the same context as Passing on Faith, and you can pre-order here. I’ll snip from that in the coming weeks. Today’s snippet is the last one from Nightsong. Here, Nate has just fanboyed all over Izzy, but Nate has a more pressing problem—the man who was supposed to sing with him is too sick to show up. Izzy’s about to make him an offer. (In case anyone isn’t familiar, “I’ll Cover You” is from Rent. This novel has numerous references to musical theater and opera.)
Izzy pursed his lips. “You weren’t planning to sing ‘I’ll Cover You,’ by any chance?”
Nate shook his head, but he blushed. “No…well, we would have if anyone had asked for an encore. Why?”
Izzy rose to his feet and drew himself up to his full height, though he still had to angle up a bit to look Nate in the eye. He gestured down at himself then to his beard. “I couldn’t pull off Angel, that’s why.”
The laugh bubbling out of Nate made Izzy a little weak-kneed.

Ha! No, probably not. 😉
AM Leibowitz
LOL. Good thing he’s not planning to try.

Heh, I’ve never seen ‘Rent’ (although I have seen Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’), but this moment explains itself! Excellent scene!
AM Leibowitz
I’ve listened to the soundtrack, but we’re seeing it live for the first time next spring. 🙂 I’ve also listened to La Boheme many times, but I’ve never seen that live either! (And yeah, there is no possible way a 6’1″ man with a beard could play Angel, LOL.)

Hmmm… Is this duet going to lead to another sort of duet later?
AM Leibowitz
Most definitely!

LOL! I like this. I’m a sucker for natural dialogue, and so many stories simply don’t have it. I can hear this exchange in my head… always a good thing. Thanks for sharing.
AM Leibowitz
Thank you! I tend to “act out” scenes with a lot of dialog in them so it sounds as natural as possible. 🙂 I’m glad it worked here.
Debbie McGowan
I’m with Izzy on the weak-kneed-ness there. These two should definitely duet more often (onstage, I mean, not the other, well, the other, too…).
AM Leibowitz
Hahaha! There’s plenty more of Izzy in Jamie’s story. 🙂 Maybe I can find a way to work in another onstage duet with Nate. Not so much the offstage kind—it’s not in either of their POVs, and I doubt Jamie wants to be there for that, LOL.

Blushing and weak-kneed guys are my weakness LOL
AM Leibowitz
😀 Me too!

Snicker! Perfect 🙂

Thank you! 😀

I love their interactions. Great snippet, A.M. 🙂
