Happy Saturday! Holidays can be rough, and not everyone is feeling festive. If you need to skip this post, that’s understandable.
Only one more week of school before vacation. Two concerts down, two to go plus the Christmas Cantata at church tomorrow. Today, cleaning and decorating. Tomorrow, baking cookies. Since we (like my family growing up) are interfaith, we’ve also been celebrating Hanukkah this week. What are you all up to?
I’m changing things up with my snippet this week for a holiday theme. This one comes from my anthology Leaps of Faith, in the story “Child’s Play.” Here, Cat (age 11) is upset because he wasn’t picked to be Mary in the Christmas pageant at his church.
Megan looked down and picked at the hem of her skirt. After a moment, she raised her eyes. “Why do you want to be Mary so much?”
Cat hesitated. “She’s so holy, and she’s pretty. I…I want to be like her.”
Rainbow Snippets is a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ authors, readers, and bloggers to share 6 sentences each week from a work of fiction—published or in-progress—or a book recommendation. Feel free to join in!

Aww, poor Cat. ♡

Yeah. Good thing he and Megan might have an idea.

Aww, how sweet! This makes me want to hug Cat. It makes perfect sense, though…Mary often is depicted as all those things.
AM Leibowitz
Yes, she is. And Cat maintains a life-long fascination with her.

Aww poor Cat. Sounds like you’re having a fun, busy holiday. I’m here cooking a jillion cookies

Cat’s still got a few tricks up his sleeve. 🙂
I was baking cookies today too, and I’ll be making more tomorrow. It’s my favorite holiday activity.
