Happy Saturday! Last weekend’s concert was amazing. Shockingly, we have this weekend free. I don’t think that happens again until May.
Lots of weird stuff happening this week. Most significantly, a bunch of us emailed Pixabay because pictures of cigarettes were showing up in searches for “gay.” Their first reaction was to shame and scold people who messaged, but ultimately, they removed the tags that allowed this to happen. I’m torn on whether to use the site. They fixed the issue, but not until after harassing people over it.
Also, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get me your submissions for the upcoming Supposed Crimes anthology, Upstaged! This is all about women who love women in performing arts, and I’d love to see what you all could do with this.
Anyway, on to the snippet. I’m sharing again from “Ashes & Alms,” my short story in the Never Too Late anthology from Beaten Track. Last week, Annie asked Jo if she was coming to the reunion of their missionary team. This week, Jo’s answer.
“Well, that’s what I’m not sure about.” Jo’s mind whirled as she tried to come up with an excuse not to go. “I haven’t been to any of the others—”
Annie scoffed. “That’s because there weren’t any. No one organized them. But it’s been forty years, and…well, I wanted to have a go.” Annie was quiet on the other end. “I really think you should come.”
“I don’t know…” Jo didn’t add that she thought the others might not even want to see her.
“That’s it, you’re coming.” The bounce was back. “Everyone will be so excited when I tell them. Trust me, you’ll have a great time catching up with them. Oh, I can’t wait!”
Jo sighed. “All right. I’ll be there.”

I feel for Jo. Ugh… Nicely done. Thank you for sharing. Be well. And Happy Writing!
Thanks! Yeah, I’m not super big on reunions myself, depending on context.
Heh, Annie seems impossible to refuse at that moment. 🙂
Annie is always impossible for Jo to refuse. 🙂
Heh. Annie reminds me just a little bit of one of my friends. “You coming? You’re coming.”
LOL! Same.
If she’s dragging her along, she’d darn well better look after her when she’s there! 😉
Oh, she will. But Jo will be looking after her right back. 🙂
Beautiful story, Ashes & Alms <3
I’m not sure whether to cheer that Jo’s going, or feel sorry for her!
