The Big BiList: Awesome bi writers, books, and resources

As promised, here is a list of bi+ writers, artists, and books. For the purpose of #BiWeek, we’re using the definition from BiNet USA:

Bisexual – A person whose enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attraction is to other people of various sexes and/or gender identities. Individuals may experience this attraction in differing ways and degrees over their lifetime.

More definitions can be found here, as collected by activist and educator Robyn Ochs.

Bi+ is a community term; it is used here as a welcoming umbrella for all multi-gender attracted people. I use it as a political and uniting term for the purpose of activism, visibility, and gaining funding for our whole community. Within that, many people choose other multi-gender-attraction labels. People who identify as asexual but bi-, pan-, etc.-romantic are included as well.

This short book is weird in all the best ways. It’s laugh-out-loud hilarious, poking fun at all kinds of human foibles.

The story starts with Kerry, the likable everywoman narrator, getting her high heel stuck in a storm grate. Rescued by the classic Handsome Stranger, this sets a series of odd adventures in motion. After escaping from an apocalyptic explosion with only their lives, Kerry and her assembled “team” must navigate the world left to them. It doesn’t go exactly according to plan, which seems to be how Kerry’s life is in general.

Armed with flashy track suits, incontinence pads, and a talking badger (yes, really), Kerry learns a lot more about herself and her friends than she does about surviving the possible zombie attacks. This is a world where things are upside down, including some abused literary tropes.

I love how so many things are satirized and turned on their ears. One of my favorites is the way both gay and straight identities are humorously played as “confused,” while bisexual identity is stable and not confusing at all. Villains are heroes, heroes are flawed, and no one is safe from the on-point wit in the writing.

There is no rest for the weary here; you stay on your toes while reading or you miss all the fun. Every time it seems like they might figure it out and save the day, there’s a new obstacle or plot twist. It’s a wild ride, so hang on tight.

For non-stop laughs, surprisingly deep thoughts, and an endearing badger, this gets 10/10 fountain pens.

About the Author

C H Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England. As her Bachelor’s Degree was in Drama, and her Master’s Dissertation focused on little known 18th Century playwright Susannah Centlivre, Clepitt’s novels are extremely dialogue driven, and it has often been observed that they would translate well to the screen.

Since graduating in 2007, she gained experience in community and music journalism, before establishing satirical news website, Newsnibbles in 2010. In 2011 she published her first book, A Reason to Stay, which follows the adventures of disillusioned retail manager, Stephen, as he is thrust into village life and the world of AmDram. Clepitt’s feminist fantasy, The Book of Abisan not only crosses worlds, but confuses genres, and has been described as a crime drama with magic. She has often said that she doesn’t like the way that choosing a genre forces you to put your book into a specific little box, and instead she prefers to distort the readers’ expectations and keep them guessing. Her 2016 work, I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse does just that, as just like the characters, the readers won’t know what’s going on in this laugh out loud satirical scifi.

This is hands-down one of the best books of 2017. As promised, this story is an intense and challenging read. What makes it so compelling is that it it reflects the idea that the world will end with a whisper and not a bang. Holden, the first-person narrator, tells us that no one can say what started it, only what happened. If one event tips just the wrong way, this is the future we will have to endure.

Holden is a terrific storyteller. He’s flawed, but he’s self-aware because he’s relating his tale with the advantage of reflection. He often laments that things would’ve been different if only he (or someone else) had known what was coming. We see his self-discovery and the way in which his mistakes ultimately empower him and those who choose loyalty to him.

The majority of the book is the frighteningly accurate potential the U.S. has to become ground zero for a world ruled by violence and division. There is a lot of descriptive violence and death throughout the story, but no explicit sex. What strikes me as utterly brilliant about that is how well it fits with the themes. We are comfortable and desensitized to the brutal killings but we become uncomfortable with what Holden calls “what you do in the dark” (in a beautifully tender scene). The story reflects this strange view of what makes us uncomfortable. Rather than undermining it by glossing over the violence and explicitly detailing the intimacy, it’s an in-your-face overt contrast.

In the midst of the post-apocalyptic chaos is the idea that some people appear to have extra abilities. It isn’t quite clear whether these powers are exclusive to LGBT+ people or whether all LGBT+ people of a certain age possess them. Either way, they are the tool of survival for Holden and what he calls “our kind.” Their origin is never entirely explained, and even the characters themselves don’t agree on how they arose.

There is a wide range of characters, none of whom use specific markers to describe who they are. However, they are easily identifiable by how they are shown on the page. Gone are the usual stereotypes, replaced by Holden’s remarkable ability to really see people for what’s inside. There’s no relying on caricatures in order to tell a compelling tale, only sensitivity and care for all “our kind.”

Holden’s story embraces complex themes about power, violence, death, identity, forgiveness, and love. Ultimately, there is a glimmer of hope as Holden discovers what he was meant to do. Because of the violence, I recommend this ideally for older teens. However, I think this should be required reading, given our current politics. If we are not careful, this vision of the future may become reality.

For exceptional writing, complex themes, and an ending that left me in tears, this gets 10/10 fountain pens.

WIPpet Wednesday: A Bi Week Snippet

Happy Wednesday! It’s overcast here, slightly cooler than it’s been the last several days. Later this afternoon, my kids will be auditioning for their school’s junior musical. Right now, I’m hanging out with my dog and making blog posts.

It’s Bisexual Awareness Week, so all my posts have been themed. I’ve written three flash fictions (read them here, here, and here), and my snippets have featured bi characters. Also, you can enter the giveaway below for your choice of anything in my backlist (excluding publishers’ multi-author anthologies).

Today, a bit more of Cian. Not only is he bi, but his relationships are what some people might call “it’s complicated.” He is the occasional partner of a family triad (a man and two women, plus their children). In this scene, he’s thinking about whether or not he wants to move a couple hours away to live with them. It’s made even more complicated by his newly developing relationship with Jamie.

WIPmath: 9/20/2017 = 20 – 17 = 3 paragraphs

Cian thought about Nell and the baby, due early in September. He could be there, living with them, just in time. It wouldn’t solve his problem of finding a day job or of reopening his studio or any number of other problems, but most of those weren’t going to be resolved by staying here, either.

The bathroom door opened, and Cian’s heart leapt. The other person he now had to consider emerged. Jamie was clad only in a t-shirt and his boxer briefs, looking sleep-rumpled but no less sexy for it. Cian had never had much in the way of specific preference. From Eric’s big, hairy frame to Skye’s fairly average curves to Nell’s willowy build, he liked all of it. He was sensual and sexual with a high drive, and not much turned him off if it was attached to someone he cared about. Jamie, though—he was something special.

Yet along with a flash of desire, Cian also had nagging regret and worry. They hadn’t even properly talked about—well, anything, if Cian were honest. Jamie wrapped his arms around his stomach and stood by the couch. Cian’s stomach dropped; Jamie was still so closed off. He looked like he wanted to say something but didn’t know how.

Full disclosure: I was not going to review this one because I was ambivalent about the first book. However, I truly can’t resist Robin Hood, so I was sucked in (and pleasantly surprised because I liked it far more than I expected).

First of all, this is not a romance. Calling it one would be a stretch. And that’s fine by me. I love a good action/adventure story, and boy does this deliver on all counts. Naturally, all the wonderful things we would expect out of a good Sherwood tale are there: Manipulative nobility, Guy of Gisborne’s jealous rage, Robin and his Merry Men doing what they do best. All the players are there on the stage, and it’s so well-written. I couldn’t help getting caught up in their plotting and scuffles.

There are some sad moments as well, which is also to be expected. They’re quite well done, and nothing in here felt played for tragedy or angst. Everything fit smoothly into the story and worked just as it should to arouse emotion without becoming tedious.

My primary complaint had been with the women in the first book. Let me say that I do not know how the author did it, but she convinced me to like one of the primary villains this time around. I hated Katrina in the first book, but I loved her cunning in this one. Marian is, of course, brilliant. She does what she needs to in order to survive a world where she is no more than property. All the other women are delightful too, and I loved beyond description how they also fit seamlessly in with the Merry Men.

The one thing I could’ve done without was the Robin/Will dynamic. That may sound odd coming from an avid reader of LGBT fiction, but it simply did not work for me. For one thing, they had absolutely no chemistry. Robin pretty much has no chemistry with anything except his bow and arrow. I also struggled to see him as believably bisexual. His interactions with women feel forced.

I also disliked having to read pages and pages (as in, nearly the whole book) of internalized homophobia. That, too, was not realistic or believable. The “inciting incident” required a warning, even though it’s not described in detail. Not only that, we had plenty of on-page heterosexual intimacy but not even flashbacks of Robin and Will (which contributed to the lack of chemistry). I don’t imagine this was the author’s intent, but the way it comes across is that either the author is uncomfortable with gay content or thinks the audience will be. The end result is having to read what feels like homo-shaming and punishment with no reward for the emotional labor that requires. It’s disappointing.

In reality, the romance was probably less than ten percent total of the book, which is fine. In future installments, I’d like to see less of Robin being conflicted and more of him enjoying himself. He seems to me much more the type to truly believe “hearts, not parts” as long as a good time is had by all.

Overall, this is superb writing and a great story. This is Robin Hood, so there’s not a whole lot brand-new in there. However, for anyone who appreciates the mythology, this is a highly immersive experience of the legend.

For an absorbing story, classic Robin Hood adventures, and the good kind of cliffhanger, this gets 8/10 fountain pens.

N.b. Dixon is an author of historical fiction. Her love for the Robin Hood legend began in a neglected corner of the school library and has continued ever since. She is a self-confessed bookworm and also a musician.

She began work on the Outlaws Legacy series in 2013, and was accepted by Beaten Track Publishing in 2016. Outlaws Legacy is a historical series based around the Robin Hood legend. The author describes it as Exciting Historical Adventure with GLBT romance.

Interview

How and why did you choose your genre?

I have a pretty broad reading taste, but I’ve always loved historical fiction. The first novel I ever wrote was set in Victorian England. I wrote it while I was in college, and it was lousy, so it got deleted quickly. After that, I tried several other genres, but in the end, I came back to historical fiction. I really think I’ve found my niche with this current series.

What inspired you to write ‘Outlaw’s Legacy?

I’ve always loved the Robin Hood legend. However, there are gaps in the story. We don’t know every detail about his life. I was intrigued by the idea of filling in those gaps. I thought it would be fun to think of the series as a biography of a mythical character. The first book in the series showed Robin as a young boy. In the sequel, he is a man in his early twenties. As the series progresses, he will age with each book, and readers will get to see every aspect of his life, just as they would if they were reading a biography of a man who really existed.

Which authors have inspired your writing?

Elizabeth Chadwick and Bernard Knight are two of my favourite authors. Both of them are fantastic storytellers, and both have the gift of description. They’re able to bring to life the period of history in which their story is set in such a way that you actually feel you are there.

Musical theatre or rock concert?

Musical theatre.

What’s a charity/cause you support?

The Royal National Institute for the Blind.

What genre other than your own do you like to read?

I love children’s literature and fantasy fiction.

LR (Cat’s sister in the Faithfully Yours series) is married to a bisexual man, and I’ve been snipping from their story on Saturdays.

Finally, every day will feature a bit of flash fiction (very short stories, in this case under 750 words). These are all on various aspects of coming out and understanding ourselves.
