Hey, all! This is the last author Q&A before the big launch. I can’t believe it’s happening in TWO DAYS! Ahem. So anyway, here are the last few questions.
Where do you get your ideas for stories?
I spin a wheel and whatever it lands on…
Okay, not really. I draw on a lot of sources. Sometimes, I start with a plot, something lifted from an article I read or an experience I or someone I know has had. Other times, I start with a character, usually with personality traits of someone I know. I’ve used writing prompts, but I tend not to like them because they feel silly or contrived. Use a specific word or set of words? Make sure to mention certain items? They’re frequently too nebulous for what I want anyway. Now and again it’s helpful if I’m stuck on something, but not usually.
How did you get published?
Well, that’s a long story, but pretty much I just happened to know someone who knew someone. A beta reading assignment through a web site led to a friendship led to a book contract. I’m sure that’s not very helpful, unfortunately, especially for anyone looking to be published by a major imprint, and it’s virtually useless for anyone interested in self-publishing.
Ariel had Flounder. Mulan had Mushu. Quasimodo had the gargoyles. If you were a Disney character, what kind of animal/creature sidekick would the story animators give you?
I like to hope I’d get something like Archimedes in The Sword in the Stone. Owls are awesome. Mine would have to be a talking owl, though. Maybe even one that could edit my work.
Can you name one wrong way to eat a Reese’s cup?
Probably, but I’ll leave you hanging until I write it into a story.
That’s it for today. Be sure to check out my Facebook page for the official launch party this coming Monday!
