Happy Saturday! I wasn’t going to snippet this week because we’re in the midst of my kids’ school musical. They’re doing BIG FISH (and local people should 100% come see this show!). I’ve never read the book or seen the movie, so I can’t say what those are like. But the stage show is wonderful, and it has a great message. It’s very moving.
One friend came out to see the show last night and said my son can “dance like Dick Van Dyke.” Which is funny, because spouse & I have made that exact comparison many times. They have similar actor styles. Also, Dick Van Dyke is awesome—the man is in his 90s and still fabulous!
Anyway, it’s ended up being pretty relaxed this time around, so here I am. Here’s another snippet from “Ashes & Alms,” my over-50 story from the anthology Never Too Late. It’s one sentence over, but I haven’t posted in weeks. đ
Jo closed her eyes and tried to picture what Annie would look like now, but she couldnât do it. The only image which came to mind was Annie at seventeen, with her long, wild hair and her ragged jeans hugging her narrow hips. Jo thought of her tanned skin, her soft, pink mouth, and her hazel eyes which appeared to change color with her moods. Sheâd never been the kind of cotton candy feminine the other girls had, but she wasnât boyish like Jo had been, either.
Her hand shaking, Jo picked up her phone. She held it in her palm for several minutes, letting her thoughts take a train back to her summer in the city. With every touch of her finger to the numbers, she was that much closer to hearing Annieâs voice again for the first time in almost forty years.
